:: Scapa Flow
The entrance to Scapa Flow from Hoxa Head on Orkney with some old World War II gun emplacements and the lights and gas flame of the Flotta Oil Terminal shining across the water. Scapa Flow is a vast natural harbour of major importance throughout British history from Viking times to both World Wars and the German Grand Fleet was scuttled here in 1919. Scapa Flow is also the site where the battleship Royal Oak was sunk in WWII with the loss of 800 lives. The grave is marked by a beacon which can be made out clearly in the high res version of the panorama but is to the left of the pink glow in the water.
